Did the ancient Greeks sail to North America?
Close study of an ancient text results in a remarkable theory: Based on a reading of one of Plutarch's dialogues, scholars propose that the ancient Greeks may have settled in the New World!
There's no evidence, strictly speaking, that the Greeks ever sailed to North America, but archaeologists have confirmed that the idea isn't preposterous. In fact, it may even be plausible. Drawing on textual interpretation, with reference to the historical record, astronomy, and geography, the theory was tested by scholars in a host of fields. The very idea, and the research that went into testing the theory, is a wonderful study of the kind of interdisciplinary academic work that reminds us that we still have a lot to learn in just about every area of human knowledge!
