Cultivating Seeds That Will Grow Forever: OLMC's Newest Kindergarten Teacher Reveals Her Daily Delight
School had been in session for less than a week when one of Sabrina Huresky’s kindergarteners went home and spent hours transforming her house’s guest bedroom into a “classroom” for her soon-to-be-born baby sister. Already utterly enamored with her teacher and the school experience, this student couldn’t wait to share it, and she made meticulous plans to teach her unborn sibling all about how gum is made from trees.
It’s no surprise that she and her classmates were so quickly enchanted by their teacher: Five year olds have a knack for spotting authentic investment versus superficial engagement, and since day one, Sabrina has been brimming with authentic investment in her students. The oldest of six children, an OLMC alum, and a natural-born teacher, she has in many ways devoted her entire life to preparing for this moment, and now her goal is twofold: to help the children in her charge form lasting habits of mind, and to cultivate within them enduring habits of heart.
With regard to their habits of mind, Sabrina recognizes that she must begin by meeting each child where he or she is at in cognitive development and respecting each one’s personal pace and preferred learning methods. All young children have an innate longing to follow where their curiosity leads, and Sabrina rejoices in each student as a unique individual designed by God with a wondrous mind that deserves to be celebrated, not suppressed.
All too often, school is where children’s natural love of learning goes to wither because their minds are treated like mere silos meant to store up information. But like her OLMC colleagues, Sabrina flatly rejects this barren view of education: Teaching should not be an exercise in shaping malleable brains as quickly as possible into prefab data receptacles. So she does not impose facts, figures, processes, or “right answers” on her students. Rather, she lovingly nurtures them: planting seeds, tilling fertile soil, pruning when necessary, all so that they may learn how to learn and blossom into the fully flourishing human beings God intends, constantly growing in wisdom and understanding.
With regard to their habits of heart, Sabrina focuses first on the “why.” Good manners, for example, are not just a grudging nod to superficial civility; on the contrary, mutual respect and deference is nothing less than a hallmark of God’s love and a recognition that He bestows that love equally on all of us and expects us to do the same. Even kindergarteners have hearts that thrive on lasting, meaningful relationships and shrivel without them, and Sabrina knows that now - when they’re five and six years old - is an ideal time to cultivate among these children the genuine love of neighbor that every person craves.
True to the school’s philosophy, she also recognizes that, like the rest of us, her students cannot give what they do not have: In order to be loving, they must first be loved. One of the main reasons Sabrina chose to work at OLMC is that between its small class sizes and humane approach to education, she has the time and space to develop real relationships and personal connections with the young people in her care, and she firmly believes that in genuinely loving them for who they are and expressing unwavering hope in their future good decisions, she gives her students faith in their own capacity for greatness and confidence in their love for others.
